...!

Services to Thornlie have now been cancelled! (according to what I hear on the radio anyway) At this rate I doubt trains will be back to normal before the afternoon peak

EDIT: Confirmed http://www.transperth.wa.gov.au/Service ... fault.aspx
"Train services are cancelled on... the Armadale/ Thornlie Line (between Perth and Cannington and Perth and Thornlie) until further notice due to a technical issue in Perth. "

Apparantly power has been restored and a 4-car train is going to run from Bassendean to Perth (all stations). They might just have things back to normal in time after all!

EDIT: The Fremantle radio operator sounded VERY relieved that trains are running along the line again. Things are slowly but surely returning to normal

EDIT2: Everything is back to normal in time for the afternoon peak!

This is my favorite Quote of the day, and the only sensible comment I have seen.
Asked whether there is a contingency plan when electrical faults occur on the line, Mr Hynes said there was no plan B.

“There is no plan B, it is an electric train network, if the electricity stops, the trains stop.”

Most likely the combustion of some flammable materials :P

Given it was an electrical fire on HV equipment, from my experience it would have been vapourisation of non-flammable materials by excessive fault current.

However that would not have caused the fire. The fire would likely have been caused by some sort of a short circuit, overload or high resistance joint.

Judging by reports of how it was arcing badly I'd say an overload or a short circuit caused the transformer to overheat and ignite. Most likely a short circuit.

"Passengers are advised that train services on the Midland Line are cancelled between Perth and Bassendean stations until further notice due to an incident on the line."

I am guessing that the hard-hitting "Trains move faster than you" campaign is not stopping them....

"Trains cancelled btwn Stirling and Perth Underground. Replacement buses operating. Mandurah Line pax need to depart from Esplanade Station."

Due to 'Technical Issues'

EDIT: From twitter it looks like a power fault...again

UPDATE: "The technical issue has now been resolved on the Joondalup Line and trains are resuming running. Passengers may still experience some delays" -2:40pm

A power outage has to suck... especially in that area! One time I was taking one of the old A set trains into Perth Underground on the Clarkson line and the driver had forgotten to turn the lights on! It was PITCH BLACK for at least 30 seconds as the train came into the station!
