Transperth Trains - Up and Down...

Post by vk6hgr »

hiyas.

This has been bugging me for a while. When Westrail/PTA staff refer to the "up line" or "down line" on rail... is it:

Down - Line away from Perth
Up - Line towards Perth

or

Up - Line away from Perth
Down - Line towards Perth

Towards Perth is the UP, away from Perth is the DOWN.

But on the Fremantle suburban line it is the reverse. I think this is because Freo was the original terminus.

this is how it works.

Joondalup Line- Down: Clarkson main UP: Perth main
Armadale Line- Down: Perth main UP: Armadale main
Fremantle Line- Down: Perth main UP: Fremantle main
Midland Line- Down: Midland main UP: Perth main

On all lines there are two mains (tracks/lines). The mains are two tracks with one track serving each direction for services on the line.

Actually, nachoman has it almost right. Traditionally 'towards port' is always UP. Which for the Perth urban network is towards Fremantle Port. That's why for all lines, except the Fremantle one, Up appears to be towards Perth, because you have to go through Perth to get to Fremantle.

If you look carefully, you'll even notice for the stations that have platform numbers, Platform 1 is towards Fremantle too.... but not for long. The numbers on the Fremantle line will be reversed to make more sense to the public... ie point towards Perth.

Hope that makes sense!
