Data screen. I believe it stands for Mobile Data Terminal.
"VKI, NJ050 will you be attending the job?"
"Negative VKI, my desk is bolted to the floor".

Love some more info on that. (Found some: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_data_terminal) We use pagers for jobs on an open VHF band. From the sounds of it they don't use APCO, still VHF or UHF?

For radio comms yes. Not all Fire appliences have the MDT screens so there's more radio traffic, but jobs are given out via pager to the station to start with anyway.

I think 99.9% of Ambo's have the screens though. Unsure how they 'work' though.

That's okay, I talked with our "head man" about it, apparently it was going to happen a while ago down here but due to small budgets it will not likely occur. Thnaks for your help!

Actually a new question, what's the difference between pagers and MDT's?

MDT is a full size screen (guessing around 14" usually touch screen) and a pager is just a simple 1-2line text readout I believe?

So why use both for jobs? The point of a new system was to stop people seeing the pagers?

Pager would be for people to view before they get in the vehicle.

Then once in the vehicle they can reference the screens for further turnout info.
