cant connect BCD396T to computer...

i downloaded the software and insatlled it all but the program wont connect to my scanner! the computer itself says the drivrs installed and connected correctly... guessed on my baud/mbps rate, but its set pretty low. software that I downloaded from unidens site...

are you using the serial lead to the serial port of your computer or a usb to serial covertor lead.
i have a 996 and had the same problem when using a usb to serial lead.
some convertors don't work.one that does is the one i got from jaycar

so since its a usb to serial what do I do? I just paid 30 bucks for the thing please dont tell me its worthless... and if so where do i get one of these serial to serial wires? hope its not more than this one...
