What are you expecting to listen to? Its a pretty standard scanner, a bit old school but does the job (in a desktop environment).
"VKI, NJ050 will you be attending the job?"
"Negative VKI, my desk is bolted to the floor".

All scanners should be able to pick up everything they say they will. I don't know and haven't heard of any that don't.

Are you having dramas with something in particular?

Fair enough.

I'd start with a list of the common things you want to be able to listen to - list them down. You might have volunteer sea rescue, fire services, aviation band, CB channels, etc etc.

Once you've got a list of what you'd like to scan, you need to figure out the frequency bands each service operates on and the emission mode. Here, Google is your friend or just ask in the forum and there's enough people with a bit of clue to be able to either give you the answers or to at least suggest where to look to find the answers.

Now you've got a list of what you want to listen to, the frequency bands they operate on and whether it's FM voice, AM voice, digital voice, etc.

From here, now it's time to go window-shopping and figure out what scanners meet those requirements. If you're lucky you'll be able to find several brands and/or models that meet your needs and you get to make a choice and pick one. If you're less lucky there might be only one brand and you're stuck with it. If you're unlucky no scanner out there will meet every single one of your requirements and you're going to need to decide what you're willing to compromise on (and as we know, life's full of compromises)...

Keep us in the loop and don't be shy to ask for help in figuring some of this stuff out!
