probably part of the contract, to stop SJA saying we need 900 ambulance crews if they only need 600 or something like that.

Can anyone give me a 'condensed' version of the contract? I was under the impression that SJA are privately owned/operated (and not-for-profit) and independent of the government? If I am wrong, please correct me. I'm still young enough to learn new things

Its a funny relationship. SJA contractys to the WA Govt to run the statewide emergency ambulance service. While SJA charges for this service and makes money other ways too, it takes a lot more mnoney to run the service.

So the Government also fund SJA.

When the contract for the ambulance service is renewed, its either 5 or 10 yearly, SJA and Govt sit at the table and negotiate how much funds are required and where it is spent - like who gets a new depot, a new truck and which depots get new crews or where they put a whole new depot (ie Secret Harbour AKA Port Kennedy).

So the govt fund a shite load of the service and get proporinate say in where the funds are spent.

Ah ok. Thanks Ambul8. So I understand the way the government works with funding, but I always thought SJA was not for profit, hence not in it to make a buck, so why do they charge the govt? :?

They do not make a profit out of it, but there is no amount of income that SJA can raise that will begin to cover the costs of an ambulance service for the whole of WA.

and remember the definition of 'not for profit': "not established for the purpose of making a profit; not entered into for money"

there is no profit dispersed to directors, sharholders, etc. any 'profit' is used by the organisation to further its objectives ie 'for the service of humanity'

Word is Boddington, Williams and another unnamed sub-centre have received lotterywest grants for new equipment. I think Lotterywest do a great thing for our state by helping us poor volunteer organisations. Boddington should have a new Merc soon enough!

Mount Barker has been given a grant and will be getting a new Merc - as stated in a post elsewhere.
