Career Opportunity with St. Johns

Post by gkoutlis »

Just wondering if the mods can make this a Sticky thread...in regards to getting into St.Johns to become a Paramedic.

I for one think, that I need to take that extra step to help people, so have kinda decided to apply for the Student Ambulance Officer intake for next year - 4 year course through ECU/St.John and graduate as a Paramedic.

Is there anyone on here, who can help out - not just for me, but for others who might be interested - to point out what you need to do, and how to get through exams - method of study, what to look out for etc....

Any helpful advice will be appreciated greatfully.

Cheers
George

Went through the process last year. Different to what i expected. The information night that they run is a good night as they tell you heaps about what would be ahead if you are accepted.

As per uni will see how i feel after this weeks exams are over.
Awsome - thanks so much for that.

I was just wondering, how do they advertise the Information nights?

Many thanks mate - Your a wealth of knowledge.

An embaressing thing about me though, is that I didn't do TEE subjects in High School - so does this mean I can't get in?

The night goes into st johns as an organisation, the recruitment process that you are about to go through, discuss the uni cse, conditions and so forth. They had a para crew attend. 1 was experienced and the other a on-road student. They both gave a presentation. It was good to hear what the student had to say as it gave some good direction. Most of the hr section were there as well as management etc.

At the end there was a question time as well as the opportunity to ask individuals and specific information that people wanted.

The testing period went ahead quite quickly. My tests were all conducted in the morning and generally knew of the next stage progression either that afternoon or the next morning. The longest wait is from the last test until notified if successful or not.

In regards to the uni cse, once accepted the head of the science dept at ecu ( very helpful bloke and loves para students ) has an information/meet and greet/bbq for all those about to start the cse ( generally held in dec). They go through what the year is about. They also ask the 2nd year students to attend so they can offer advice and answer any questions that you have re the uni year.

funny becuase down here at the sub center, all you need to do is a course less then a year to become a volonteer officer and attend jobs.
why is that?

Because your a volunteer and to train you as a paramedic
1) is costly for them to do
2) would take ages to get volunteers in the country region trained up.
3) volunteers have jobs/lifes so also would make it impossible to do it.
4) A volunteer paramedic haha the union wouldnt have it :P

Do students have to pay HECS fees to become a Paramedic?

I think it is silly that they dont pay students from day one, how is someone with kids and a morgage going to stop working to study for 12 months?

Bomber might know about that one he is going through the process at the moment.

And your right dazla SJA in W.A seem to be the only ambulance service that do that, other services you get paid unless of course you do it on your own through uni.
