UPDATE: 2pm: Firefighters have contained a factory fire in O’Connor which has caused evacuations and road closures in the area, but the damage bill from the blaze is expected to top $10 million.

A FESA spokeswoman said workers in the O’Connor industrial area are still being urged to evacuate and nearby residents in Willagee should stay indoors because of heavy smoke pouring from the factory fire on McNeece Place.

The smoke, which has been tested and is currently thought to be non-toxic, has also forced the closure of Stock Road between South Street and Leach Highway and Peel Road between Chamberlain Street and Stock Road.

Only two of the factory’s 140 staff members required medical attention. The pair were taken to a local clinic where they were treated for smoke inhalation.

People living or working on Stock Road from Garling Street to Leach Highway, Leach Highway to Northlake Road, Northlake Road from Leach Highway to Stock Road, South Street from Northlake Road to Lander Street and Lander from South Street to Garling Street have been advised to stay indoors with their air-conditioners switched off.

Over 40 fire fighters are currently still on site battling the blaze, which is believed to have started in the roof cavity of Western Meat Packers in McNeece Road, O’Connor at about 10.30am.

Company owner Rod Russell said the factory, which FESA described as “gutted” by the blaze, had been totally refurbished just four years ago.

“There’s a lot of black smoke and you can see the flames,” he said.

“It’s gone through the whole lot. It’s well and truly going at the moment, it will be hours before they get it out.”
