That'd be Stirling's tracker dog, and handler. He became the only qualified SES dog in the state, this Sunday just been, and got his first call out on Tuesday night.

The antenna is right at a level where it could take out an eye when getting the ladder down.
They are also almost invisible at night, I don't know if they had rubber ends to start with, but if they did, they've been pulled off by the roller doors.
I think they either need to be moved or have something soft and bright but robust attached to the tip.

Nope they're almost the same as the FRS and BFS VHF whips, just a piece of wire...feel free to attach some electrical tape to the top.

I felt all warm and fuzzy at training last night when i read an article out of the melville local paper written by a lady whose house we attended when the storm came through a few weeks back. the title was "SES ARE A GODSEND". and she was so pleased that within approximately 90 mins of calling it in we were on her roof cutting the tree out.

Wednesday evenings are a popular training evening for some SES units.

Wonder if it'll turn out like last time they had it manned from 0000 I think by 0800 that day they'd decided that everything should just be run at local unit level.

For those interested, Stirling will be operating in the vicinity of John Forrest National Park, more than likely on Simplex doing a Navigate in an Urban and Rural Environment (Map and Nav with compasses) assessment. In the past these assessments have either involved searches for missing kids or casualties...not sure what we'll get tomorrow but I hope it's not my group finding the casualty again if there is one! Our usual simplex channel is 16.

Quick question, what training has the SES got in relation to USAR/Structural collapse?

General Rescue TRP (TRK currently under construction) covers the essential training for mitigation of further structural collapse.
This training permits SES volunteers to assess damage and shore up parts of a building to make the incident site safe for other personnel

Further training includes USAR category 1 (PUASAR001A) which is focused more on larger scale incidents (Thredbo, Granville etc) but can be utilised in part for these type of incidents.

In a larger incident where specialist equipment and accessing of voids and confined spaces is required, USAR cat 2 would be involved (Specialist USAR deployed from Forrestfield)
A major incident would also include USAR cat 3 (Command Control and Management)

A key element of the training is knowing when an incident is beyond the scope of that training or the capabilities of the available personnel and resources, and this is when the team leader would request assistance from specialised career services.

Most SES units will train in all aspects of shoring. we did one where we go into a house that was ready for demolition and did some shoring in there. the best training would be the usar, it just so happens that im a chippy and i have quite a bit of experience in load bearings, the way building work and what needs supporting, so i end up going to most Car v houses in my area

check out some photos of my latest Car v House in Bicton (20/6/2009) at www.facebook.com/atreen and feel free to add me as a friend.

shoring is also taught on storm and water damage courses so stabilisation of walls and roof structures is quite common. However supporting an industrial building would not be.
