WA Radio Scanner Users' Group

It may have already been answered on this site before, so someone might be able to point me in the right direction, but is there a specific reason why 6IP is called 6IP?? Was raised recently at a training session and could not be answered.

Likewise, 6AR?? I mostly understand the difference between both of them but is there a reason for using AR and IP.

I might be wrong on this but you call 6AR is used when you are within the gazetted metro fire district and call 6IP when you're outside of the district.

- 6IP and 6AR are part of the land base licenced callsigns. The full licenced callsigns are VL6IP and VL6AR - VL = Australia region, 6 = WA the state, AR & IP = licenced agencies i.e. Fire & Rescue Service and Bushfire Service.
- Ambos use 6DS and the same pricipals VL6DS...
- Others are different e.g. VKI = WA police, VKC = Vic police, VKG = NSW police etc.
- Amateur radio is similar VK6...... = WA Amateur radio operatior, though I cannot remember the specifics on their level. Maybe better to ask one of the others on this..
- VH = Australian registered aircraft e.g. VH-RFD
- VNX = Burearu of Meterorology (federal callsign)

'V' identifies Australia..

Yeah, i was almost sure this was the case. I was more after the reason why called 6IP but thanks for your reply anyways, we are thinking along the same lines

Just a note... VH,VI,VJ,VK,VL,VM,VN,VZ = Australia (not counting AX)
V is also used by Canada, UK, Hong Kong, India and Antigua/Barbuda

Not true. Ever hear Northam FRS call in? They don't call 6AR...

Fastlane is correct.

SOP 8 clearly states that you call 6AR when you are within the gazetted METRO fire district and call 6IP when you're outside of the district.

Northam is well outside of the metro fire district and thus calls 6IP. (I heard them calling 6IP when they were turning out to a DBA on Saturday.)
