From the FESA site:

A new $9.5million city fire station is to be built in Wellington Street, Perth.

Emergency Services Minister John Kobelke today announced the tender process for construction of the new station.

Funding for the project was approved by the State Government early in 2005.

“The Government’s decision to replace Perth Fire Station followed intensive research and planning by FESA and is in line with a commitment to improve the quality of its services,â€

See on the news they had a protest about moving the guys down the road, union stated waste of money for no gain.

What part of wellington street they said 500m from the current site-peak hour on wellington street is a nightmare on any normal day.

They don't, only 4 units instead of the 10 or so they have currently. Coming from a mate I met in the SES who works out of the current station. Fesa is currently screaming for people but they're wanting to downsize Perth Fire station...makes sense...not

10 units at Perth Fire Station!?

As for makes sense, it makes sense NOT to put all your eggs in one basket. Theres already been alot of stuff moved out of Perth the past years. Best to spread your resources around than stick em all in the one place.

All I can think of @ Perth FULL TIME are:

- 1st, 2nd, 3rd Pump
- Perth CLP
- Line Rescue Vehicle
- Personnel Carrier
- Perth Ute

Only 4 of those are firefighting appliances.
(any others anyone?)

I'll ask my mate what they have. They'd also have light tankers with those pumps wouldn't they? so that'd make 10 appliances/brigade vehicles.

only during the summer period they do. Even then not all of the pumps do.

The arguement against the new station however isnt the amount of trucks that they will have, its that they feel that the money could be better spent in other areas. Upgrades to old stations, over due replacement of pumps in particular the old medium pumps, which are between 10-15 yrs old. The staffing levels of late is also an issue. They are short of firefighters and require a recruitment. You even have butler crew living out of a demountable during the day and relocated to perth fire station at night.

It's a pretty damn nice demountable too! It goes 24 hours very soon. The reason for that isn't money.. its land availability.. the area the station is going hasnt been developed yet! Scary thing is, that 'temporary' station has probably cost more than what FESA gave us to build a permanent station via the ESL.

Just admin and commcen which is also at the perth station. Does seem a great waste. I guess there must be a sinister plan for the building in the future

Story was, that it was cheaper to build a new station than to upgrade the existing one to 'current standards'. I think you'll find Comcen will move in the next few years as will admin.
