I think we should have a sticky for major fires such as 3rd and 4th alarms and fires with bombers and helitacs.

So let me start with the fire currently in Jandakot, Worton rd, properties under threat

Jandikot and Success first turn out
Cockburn CFM

Cockburn cfm has asked for south coogee lt and 2.4 and Canningvale 2.4

Fire ground channel 49

They assigned a channel before even giving a classification

Caused by lightning

6IP asking if cfm wants a icv- doesnt want it

CFM says there is peat and paper barks and need bulk water

Perhaps you can teach the experts something about putting out peat fires, 'coz no-one else can do it? :P

The problem is that is burns underground, possibly up to a couple of metres as the combustible material is not densely packed. As a consequence it can seem all blacked out yet be burning underground and pop up elsewhere. Some peat areas depending on time of year are soft so cant be driven on making extinguishment very difficult. You might have a good control line blacked out yet the peat burning underground many metres away can burn under this control line and cause ignition outside of the control line

I remember watching something on the History channel about something similar in the states with coal seams. The seam can burn underground for centuries, rendering the towns above the seam uninhabitable due to the exhaust gasses seeping up from under the earth. Nasty!

not all peats are the same, and what some of us call peat down here, yous might not up there, we dont have any real swaps or anything like you do fastlane so what we call peat probably really isnt actual peat.

I know with our "peat", a stack of water, use of jets and monitors pretty much does the trick (but then again not always)

Anyways can we get back on topic and settle anything disagreements out by pm or in another topic.
