by the sounds of things the 6AR has been having trouble with the whole MDT system today.

No. They "may" sometimes get a spare appliance with a MDT (this is rare in itself), however the MDT's ability to recieve calls is not functional.

For someone who doesnt work within FRS, what are MDT's?

MDT - I think from memory, is Mobile Data Transfer (unit).

guys when did they stop Painting BFB appliances yellow? and why did they change it too white?

There are still yellow BFS appliances out there but they are few in number and mostly old. I haven't seen any new yellow BFS appliances come out since as far back as I can remember being interested in emergency vehicles and that goes back to the early 90s.

re-sale value. people would buy a white truck before buying a yellow truck. long ago all western power vehicles were yellow, then they changed them to white as the re-sale value is higher, must of been the same time BFB changed from yellow to white.
