Damn! I'm not at home this weekend and there's a couple of big fires in my area (I live only a km or so from Gavin...)firefly.000 wrote:Whiteman have there own fire defence and Malaga and West Swan also get turned out.
I worked at Whiteman Park over 10 years ago now and we had a reasonably good fire system in place - we could cope with smallish fires by ourselves without having to call for assistance.
I don't know what resources they have now, but during summer there were three fast attack fire units (now called light tankers of course) that were on the backs of WP four wheel drives. There were part time fire units as well with the resident farmer, the youth camp and the railways. Most paid personnel were trained by City of Swan as were key volunteers from the various groups that inhabit the park (railways, tramways, etc).
West Swan were the usual backup in case things looked like they couldn't be handled by internal resources and conversely any fires outside that had the potential to become a problem for the park, some Whiteman units would be tasked along with East Swan / West Swan / Gidge, etc.
I don't know how much of that still goes on - we're talking ancient history here

firefly, didn't realise that that big one was so long ago. I also attended that one, along with the Neerabup fire that went for many days, around that time. Firecall conditions in an Acco and LT from Kalamunda to Neerabup was fun.
The Telstra Comms facility was interesting to get up close to, I seem to remember at least one Heavy Pump and 1 or 2 others were there when we turned up.
Around that area they tend to have alot of trouble with access, due to the sand, as well as many tyres getting spiked etc. Hope there aren't any big ones around when I am back there in a week, I'll feel like jumping on a truck and helping out!
Good luck to all involved and stay safe.

They lost some of the vintage tractors, lost numerous sheds etc etc, was listening to the main ops channel for the fire (31), a sector comander needed more resources because they was losing property, ic said they didnt have the resources to allocate to the sector, yet they still didnt get more appliances to go to the incident
Whiteman park should sue FESA for not responding appropriately to the situation, they lost some vintage tractors, numerous sheds.... at the start of the incident all they had was whiteman park, quinns and 3 frs brigades, so what if resources north of the river where streched, thats what the strike team is for... u have all these appliances south of the river, its better to have overkill than a lack of appliances, you can always stand them down, but when the fire is rippin like it was, time is ... FESA relies on frs way too much, they should have had as many bfb there as possible either north or south of the river... ic went on about having no water because the hydrants werent workin, then get some 7.2's and 9.2's down there and stop relying on frs to save the day... they cant be experts in all fields, not when u have bushfire brigades with 20 or so years experience in fighting bush fires, nowing the way the fire changes with different fuel and wind conditions, they know more because they only go to bush fires, they are specialised in fighting bush fires...yes rely on them to save asset because they are specialised in it, but not bushfires that big... its rediculous the way the situation was handled ![Rolling Eyes ](./images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif)
