G'Day,
Quick question; when turning out how many crew's go? I presume its four - two [2] in the pump and two [2] in the Lt?
I am basing my assumption on like a station like Butler where they have one pump and a LT?

Different stations have different vehicles with different manning requirements. The typical station of a pump and a lt has a safety manning of 4. 2 FF's in the pump and 2 in the lt. This the case through out the metro area. where ever you see a pump there will 4 guys attached to it.
Other appliances such as the SET has a minimum of 4 guys but appliances such as 2.4's and aerials only have 2 FF's.

some stations have only a pump, but there are 4 guys in there.
usualy it goes you must have a
2 x BA wearers
1 x Entry Control Officer/Pump operator
1 x OIC
it is the same with VFRS, before we can turn out we must have this minimum crew.

What's the thinking behind having an LT and not a second pump?
I understand LTs are pretty useful for bushfires but what about structures?

not so good at structures, but cheaper to run than a second pump, and can still be used for crew protection/barrier at road crashes.

Hey buddah, good to see you guys follow that safety manning procedure, unlike some vollie stations I know of turning out to MVA's and Structure fires with only 2 or 3 guys, looks pretty average if you ask me and is seriously dangerous

All out stations ie other than perth have a pump and light tanker. Several stations welshpool, daglish and freo have a 2nd pump as well.
these stations generally have a light tanker for the 1st pump and during summer may have a lt for their 2nd pump.
No single appliance station has a pump only.
As mentioned saftey manning is 4 which consistes of 1 Station officer and 3 firefighters.
The light tanker is obviously useful at bush fires but also at structure fires with an extra 600 lts of water, traffic accidents to block off the road ,extra equipment etc. Can be useful for getting in behind houses where the pump might not fit.

Is 2 + 2 the usual crew strength or just the paper minimum?

Perth station usually has all 4 in the pump and take on some light tankers in the summer, I'm not sure though if they still roll with 4 and the pump and then 2 in the LT.

with the vollies. SOP states that you must have 4 crews which are;
2 x BA
1 x pump operator/ECO
1 x OIC
but with vollie stations, like us we have a HSR2.4 + 2 Light Takers (during summer only, usually its just one)
and we have turned out with 6 crews in the HSR + 2 crews in each light tanker + 4 crews in private cars.
at some incidents, we need extra crews, like during log BA jobs. During bush fires we don't like people Turing out in cars, they are better off going home, and coming back when the crew need reliving.
with the perms, there max crew is usually 4 crews on station, with addition crews for specialized trucks (CLP, TTL, ICV, 2.4U, SET)
