FAQ: I can't receive FESA on 78Mhz

Post by vk6hgr »

Hi All.

Many people asked me what they can do about receiving FESA frequencies better. Because of their low frequency (78Mhz) the whip antenna that comes with most handheld scanners is too short to receive it very well. Here's what you can do:

Option 1). Wait for FESA to move to VHF high band (150Mhz) and UHF (Metro). FESA have plans to modernise their radio network and move away from 78Mhz in the near future. The question is when...

Option 2). External antenna. A good outdoor scanner antenna designed to cover 78Mhz and other bands is always a good investment. Antennas designed for car radios will also work. (I split the car radio antenna in my car for the FESA scanner and it worked well)

Option 3). Listen on the UHF link. 6IP have a UHF repeater link on 451.075Mhz. It's low power and you'll miss some country 6IP traffic, but it does work for listening to the command channel.
