Just seen this on Perth Now,
http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/western ... 5900562867

THE WA Police Union has called for a trial of a hi-tech emergency services concept car, amid concerns about the safety of WA police vehicles.
Union boss Russell Armstrong will today meet Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan to discuss the plan, just days after he and police executive director Greg Italiano returned from Melbourne to view the $60,000 prototype vehicle, which includes a gammut of extra safety features.

Using a VE Holden Commodore SV6, the National Safety Agency has developed the concept car, including emerging technology such as automatic number plate recognition, database access, mobile automated fingerprint and facial recognition units into the prototype police vehicle

More on the Perth Now website, but I think SV6 as a GD Car and SS for highway patrol and other specialist units would be more appropriate.

Too bad the fleet has been snubbed any type SV6 due to budget concerns and the SS will never be used.

Am I the only one thinking 'This will never happen'?

lets hope it happens. they look saaaweeeeeeeettttttt...... but then again it more than likely wont go ahead.. ther is no need fo V8 police vehicles such as SS either.. any standard falcon/commodore can do the max 140km/h, albeit they get there a little slower than a V8. lol

That's exactly the reason they need V8's or Turbo's

personal opinion.. as i said, any falcon/commodore can do 140km/h. Dont get me wrong.. i't would be nice to drive V8's for sure but is it really absolutely necessary to have V8s?

To be able to effectively catch up to some vehicles it is, yes.

Exactly what it says! Its often safer not to catch them. Four dead after high speed pursuits in Perth over three years. And your a 'bloody idiot' if you think its safe.

and a lot of the times they're not caught. Police work ikn general is not safe, BUT all they had to do was STOP when called upon! They're in the wrong, they chose to run, they stole the car, the robbed the house, they stole the property. Not the police. Let them do their job and if idiots don't stop then die in the process, that's unlucky. WA have the most stringent pursuit policy in the country. I for one am sick of people saying ''just take the number plate and speak to them later''. That does not work if the car is stolen. Nor will that help if the cars full of drugs, stolen property, etc.

The only issue I have is when the clown behind the wheel of the vehicle being pursued crashes into and injures/kills other innocent road users. I hold the person being pursued fully responsible for their actions and feel that person should be being charged with manslaughter not just dangerous driving causing death/injury or whatever. I'll stop now before I start abusing the way the law currently stands with sentencing etc.

Let's not forget that in each of these cases, the person who died was fleeing from the law, and therefore in my opinion chose their own fate.

As Tyranus said, the person who is choosing to run from police is ultimately responsible, not the police who are doing their job in upholding the law.

If they are trying to evade the police, there's likely to be a good reason why. Perhaps there's drugs or weapons in the car. Perhaps there's some other reason.

Police should be given greater ability to chase down crooks, we shouldn't be tying their hands with yet more red tape.
