I was driving on the Roe HWY tonight and passed a speed camera. i was driving at 102kmph. there was a red light on the camera was i flashed? there was no white light... (it was dark and raining).
There was 4 cars infront of me and they all sped past me, but i didnt notice a red light when they passed the cameras. why is this?

you'll know if it flashes you. They use a red light as the effect on your vision is minimised. As everyone knows that driving at night is more hazardous if they blind you with a white light and you have an accident afterwards you could claim that you couldn't see anything because of the flash. The red light however will not have the same effect as it is filtered. Defence Forces and even in theatre backstage crews and often technicians in the biobox will use red lamps as it has less of a blinding effect when shifting from a brightly lit page to darkened stage or from a lit map to a darkened trail.

Can confirm you will know if you have been flashed, and it is a bright red light.

often the camera will be mounted to capture you from behind... so the flash does not affect your vision.

i see this quite regularly.. often on Stirling HWY Mosman park....

I've never seen one doing it, however, I recall something about the law being changed a few years ago so they COULD? ie, putting the onus on the registered owner of the vehicle to prove they were/weren't driving..

At one stage they were trialling rear plate photos due to motorcycles still not requiring front plate. I have no idea if they still do it though or if the trial was front AND back.

It was recently just the other day on Orrong Road just before the Wright Street Intersection (Carlisle), and a Mutlinova was setup in broad daylight capturing vehicle number plates from behind not the front.

Any serving WAPOL member will be able to tell you that there are a few of these setups around the metropolitan area.

It's not often they do it that way but yes there are some that are setup facing the direction of travel to catch the rear. I've even seen on occasion them setup in a large median strip. Though that was a while ago.

This was confirmed tonight on the news that they employ rear facing cameras.
