Which channels or callsigns?

It could be the car/base accidentally using analogue instead of the digital side.

A 4 element yagi in NE suburbs; not picking up any country stuff at all. Used to be able to pick up Freo channel with max signal so I would have thought I'd get something

A folded dipole in Swanbourne (on a 10 metre mast); I hear the very occasional word or two from places unknown. Used to be able to pick up Midland channel reasonably well.

The country channels are posted somewhere on the site. See what's close to you. Mine are home-made but you could possibly pick up a high gain amateur antenna for the 70cm band. It's pretty close.

(Edit)
These also work quite well on the UHF SES channels and anything else that's in the vicinity of 450-500 MHz
