Doesn't take a rocket scientist, riding along with the officers for a shift/period of time.

And I would highly doubt it unless your about to be a recruit.
"VKI, NJ050 will you be attending the job?"
"Negative VKI, my desk is bolted to the floor".

I heard a female cop go right off because she was sick & tired of beeing a free " blue & white taxi service".
i dunno how you would go, i think they would rather be fighting crime then giving people rides

i had 2 officers offer to take me home after i got pulled over for unlicensed vehicle. had to leave my car where it was and they offered to drive me the rest of the way.. lol only after i told them i was about to put my application in.

I let them know how much i appreciated the ride even when they had no obligation to give me a lift. :smt023

When I lived in a large country town we used to get lifts home from the nightclub in the back of the paddywagon from officers we played footy with.

Agreed, country rocks for things like that...While some might not like to act as a taxi service, perth taxi's are notouriously SH!T so I suppose some might consider it better to give you a lift if they're heading in that general direction, rather than come back to a crime scene. Or have you reporting a mugging or worse.
