The Radio & Electronic Services Unit (RESU) are responsible for the complete WAPOL radio network. This role performs all manner of technical work in the planning, testing, installation, modification, maintenance and trouble-shooting of the two-way radio transmitters and receivers in both the fixed and mobile radio environment.

Any candidate must be capable of displaying innovation in problem solving, showing initiative to find suitable solutions to problems, assessing options before implementing solutions and evaluating procedures and devising new solutions.

Opportunities exist to work in the Research & Development and Projects areas of the unit.

The position is based in Maylands, Perth, WA and will offer field trips for planned maintenance and fault repair tasks.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The role of the position is to evaluate, repair and construct complex and varied types of radio communications and ancillary electronic equipment used by WAPOL. The position’s role may include providing staff with training in the operation of High Frequency long-range radios and the resolution of diagnostic radio problems.

As solutions to problems may not be readily available from source documents, the incumbent must be capable of: displaying innovation in problem solving; showing initiative to find suitable solutions to problems; assessing options before implementing solutions; and, evaluating procedures and devising new solutions. The incumbent may also be required to assist other officers to find suitable solutions to radio and associated electronic problems.

Contacts within WAPOL include the Communications Division (TOPS), the Tactical Response Group, the State Intelligence Portfolio and the Forensic Division.

External contacts of the position include the Department for Planning & Infrastructure, the Department of Fisheries, the Fire and Emergency Services Authority, the Water Corporation, the Department of Environment and Conservation, Western Power, St. John Ambulance Australia, various telecommunications agencies and other private enterprises.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Applicants are asked to address the following nominated criteria only;

Ability to diagnose and repair faults in a wide range of electronic equipment and radio network systems in a practical environment.
Knowledge of and experience in land mobile radio communications equipment and Spectrum Management regulations.
Ability to meet strict deadlines and comply with accepted quality assurance procedures with minimal direct supervision.

The pay is a lot better than a lot of Tech's get unless they move to the mines or places like that. A typical Resu Tech will get about 75k with allowances for travel sometimes more if they participate in the Northwest preventive maintenance trip. For the right technician it offers lots of opportunities providing the know their stuff, enjoy a regimented workplace and like to travel.

That's quite decent pay for a radio tech.

Heck, I work as an IT manager with the govt and I'm a pay grade lower!

Really why would you want to? When you can earn over $100,000 in the city on construction site, working less hours , with all EBA benefits, and 20min train ride home? I have mates in the mines that make the same amount and work double the hours. You do the maths.
