Twenty-five children have been injured - one of them critically - in a collision between a school bus and a truck south of Perth, authorities say.

A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said it was believed 47 children aged between 10 and 12 were on the school bus when the crash occurred at the intersection of Mandurah and Stakehill roads in Port Kennedy, about 60km south of Perth.

Four of the 25 hurt passengers were suffering serious injuries and would be taken to Rockingham hospital, the ambulance spokeswoman said.

The critically injured child would be airlifted to hospital in Perth, she told ABC radio.

The other 20 - who are considered "walking wounded" - would be taken to Fremantle and Mandurah hospitals, she said.

Police said the bus rolled over after the initial collision shortly before 4pm (WST) and a witness said the bus was lying on its side on the carriageway.

Six ambulances were immediately dispatched to the scene in addition to the rescue helicopter.

Roads surrounding the crash site quickly became congested, and police are urging motorists to avoid the area.

Diversions have been put in place but vehicles are already banked up for several kilometres.

All southbound lanes on Mandurah Road have been closed north of Stakehill Road.

The students were from Mandurah Baptist College, a spokeswoman for that school confirmed.

"They'd been out for sport and they were on their way back (to school)," the college spokeswoman said.

"We have contacted almost all the parents, so they are here waiting."

School principal Mark Ashby had gone to the scene after learning of the crash, she added.
