WA Police Changeover to Digital Radio

Interesting messing around with my new 396T.

Although the actual conversations are encrypted, it can succesfully track the conversations on the police digital system. I had it logging talk groups today, and they use well over 40!

All I need now is for a talk group or two to accidentally become unencrypted for a while

Hi Gav,

What is the benefits of using a T963? What I mean is, what can a digital scanner do that a normal scanner can't? Probably digital signals, but what transmits on digital? Also what is trunk tracking?

Well it can receive digital APCO 25 transmissions, which only the police use at the moment. It can also track analogue trunking.

Trunking is a way to use a few number of real frequencies to offer a large number of channels, by dynamically allocating those channels to frequencies as conversations take place. It's explained quite well here:

Hi Gav,

What frequencies are you tuning around on - 502MHz im guessing? I have recently purchased a PCR-2500 and would be interested in scanning around the 'channels' you have mentioned...

Any hints?

The trunking control channels are all ~502MHz. I'll make a new thread mapping out the ones I can receive here.

Purely intellectual exercise of course since they don't have any unencrypted talkgroups

WA is going to increase the capacity of it's new system. It will be pretty much doubled in size when compared to it's current fleetmap layout.

There will be some new system towers bought online and some will also be comissioned inside of existing Government Infrastructure. (Big walls, lots of razor wire, many people wishing they were not there!)

DCS will become users of the system as well once the capacity has been increased.

This information was found on the internet doing a google search .... i found it in 5 secs flat .... i think it wasn't meant for public consumption - however whoever posted it did in such a way that the google.bot logged it and is now accessible to all and sundry

It mentions that the "Crime and Corruption Commission" are already on the network and that a business case is being prepared for the Department of Corrective Services
