What is PMRN?
The Police Metropolitan Radio Network is a DIGITAL trunked radio system set up by MOTOROLA for BEST for the emergency services in the metropolitan area to use.

Who is going to use the PMRN?
Initially the Western Australia Police (in the metropolitan area) There are talks about the likes or Correction facilities joining on to the system.
When is the PMRN going to be introduced?
The PMRN will be Fully opperational by December 2007 With the Analog network being "Decoupled" Early June.

Are any other services going to use the PMRN?
At present the system is only being planned for the Metropolitan, Opperated by WAPOL, the introduction of Correction Facilities is something that is being looked at.

Why is the PMRN being introduced?
There are a number of reasons why - security (secure from being monitored and radio's being stolen), interoperability (agencies can talk direct to each other), better reception. Also the current technology used is getting very old and is prone to interference and failure.

What system is being used?
Motorola won the PMRN contract and are implementing an APCO-25 (ASTRO) system.

So can I still monitor an APCO-25 system?
Yes so long as the talkgroup is not encrypted.

So I can no longer listen if encryption is used?
Correct - The WAPOL has encryption

Are any agencies using encryption?
Yes – ALL Metro Western Australia Police talkgroups are encrypted.

So what if I steal a radio so I can still listen to the police?
if a radio is stolen and reported as such the radio will be listed as "Lost" and is Removed from the network, deeming it useless. the radio will need to be returned to the WAPOL technical officers for re configuring.

Can I buy a Motorola radio and clone it?
The system will recognise two radio's with the same ID and reject both – ‘stunning’ them in the process.

Latest news from my spies "inside the camp" tell me that WAPOL have just received $100m to install Digital Comms into Country Area's starting towards the South (Bunbury, Busselton) and then moving across to the East (at this point just to Northam). So we may have to setup a 'Remote RX' station beyond these locations over the next couple of years to continue enjoying that much missed analogue TX....

At least those that listen to Gero will be fine!

Thanks for that. It appears the possibilities are endless. If other services can use the same system you could have instant temporary crosslinks for major incidents. RadSupp could just click a button. I just hope they have plenty of redundancy. I'd hate to see it all come crashing down when a backhoe operator gets a little overenthusiastic.

I might as well stop trying to fit a flux capacitor to my microwave oven.
