"Caller ID" for WAPS Radio's??
Was monitoring Channel 8 on Wednesday night when VKI mentioned that in approximately 1 month time they will be able to identify the Vehicle calling as soon as they push their button to talk.
Reason it was bought up is a couple of UQ vehicles were mucking around on Channel 8 and not identifying themselves to VKI. VKI then said "enjoy your fun for the next month......" and so the story was told.

SJA have had this system for some time, as soon the radio ch is opened from an ambulance its ID comes up on a display panel infront of the radio operator. from what i know and have been speaking to some tchys bout it 1st of july this year the digital system while be taking over so far nearly all the districts have the new radios in the cars now being a towie ya tend to look into police cars alot lol but from the last time i spoke to a mate of mine who will remain nameless the system will be fully operational 1st july and the cars will be gps tracked and all radios will have ANI (automatic number idetifaction )

"Caller ID"
When VKI switches over to the Motorola ACPO 25 system in 2007 (currently under testing in Perth CBD area, with a link to the old analog system) each radio will transmit an identification number. This is not an alpha numeric but only a numeric number. The format is 12345678. Where each number will represent a particular character. eg the call sign VR201 will be displayed as 22180201.
This number will be transmitted each time the PTT is pressed. There is also a emergency call facility ORANGE button on the top of the radio. This will open the radio in the transmit mode with out any indication to the user.
There is also the facility to have the radio put in emergency mode, via remote. However currently this is against the Law in WA, so WAPOL is trying to have it ammended.
The new digital system when it comes on line will be a gaint leap in assistance to the front line troops, a bummer for scanner users, but thats life......

What's the purpose of this orange emergancy button. Emergency Button
Pressing the emergency button will do two things:
1. It will transmit the caller ID number. This can then be cross corelated with the mobile unit which will have GPS fitted as well. The portables whilst they are GPS compatable will not be fitted with GPS. This is because with a digital network each radio is classified as a NODE as this takes up network recourses. What will happen is that the radio will be switched off when not required and only activated when needed.
2. It will open up the mike effectivaly making a "HOT MIKE". This will make the radio transmit for a period of 10-30 seconds. The dispatcher and all other units will be able to hear what is happening.

Emergency Button
I know this site is a japanese site but have a look at the image of the XTS5000. Just infront of the antenna you can see the orange button. This button requires a positive push on it for it to activate. it is my belief that it cannot be accidentally activated.
As far as VKI talking to the officer in trouble, the communications during an emergency transmission is one way only, that is from the mobile/portable to VKI. Once the unit ceases its emergency transmission VKI will then be able to talk to the unit in question
