They have been posting in existing threads as well but usually it's cleaned up before most people notice. It's not always possible. If anything, it's good to know that they go to all that effort for nothing :-)

The spam has been getting worse lately. I wonder if it's possible to only allow postings after the requester has been authorised rather than allow postings as soon as someone registers or for new messages by newly registered persons, have them read by a mod before posting to ensure it is a legitimate post and not spam.

I know it makes more work for the mods but they have extra to do deleting spam anyhow.

A couple of websites have the first post has to be premoderated. And that flushes out 99% of spammers. Let's say one new member a day, about half actually post anything, so about three to four new posts per week have to be pre-moderated versus quite a bit of spam that has to be deleted anyway. My 2c.

Wow, that's a lot higher than I thought. I was just going by the member list for the last couple of weeks. There may be a slight flaw in my logic now.

A lot of the spammers get deleted before they get on the member list. The admins go through the list and pings many of them before they finalise registration, some get through that phase and get registered. Most of them get pinged before anything happens. A small minority get by unnoticed or when nobody is on the board and do post spam but it usually gets cleaned up quickly by the mods or admins.

Yep - nothing to worry about though. As soon as a mod or admin logs on and notices the spam, it gets deleted straight away.

Best thing to do is to simply ignore it and move on to the next thread. Click the "Report" button too if you like, and flag the post as spam.

Captcha? What's that? Does it look anything like the thing at the bottom of the WARSUG registration page?

Having a special question to answer wouldn't stop what's happening from happening, as the people who are signing up are real human beings, not robots.

So even if you asked "what's the fifth word in the line underneath the page's title?" (i.e. "responsible"), then any human being who can read the English language and count to at least five would be able to answer it.

There's no "problem" here to solve. Spammers come, leave their mark, and we delete them. Everyone else continues on just as before.
