Repainting gutters

Post by vk6hgr »

Hi Folks.

This question is as off-topic as it gets :-)

The paint on the gutters on my house is starting to flake and come off. Now I'm after some insight - how much of the flaky paint do I have to remove before I paint over it without it looking patchy? (all of it?)

Sounds like its time to sell your house. Let some other mug have a crack at it.

To get a professional job you will need to get it all off. I would just get a Karcher or Gurney gun and get most of it off then touch it up a bit. Probably need to run a sander over it too. Being in Beechboro you won't need to worry as much about rust as say someone in Cottesloe.

Talk about a project! Well Gav going off painting walls you'd need to sand the gutters so that it's all consistent. i.e. there's no flakey bits left. and probably 2 coats would get it looking good. Might need to remove all paint or have more coats of paint if you're going from dark to light colours.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. Me thinks it might be a good idea to pay a painter :)

I agree, it is much better to get a painter to do all the hard work!

I repainted mine a couple of years ago, but the rust made its way through pretty quickly, I ended up getting the whole lot replaced with new Colourbond gutters this year, and it didn't cost anywhere near what I thought it would
