Yep, old as the hills in internet years. Pics from it are used a lot as an internet meme. Usually captioned with something like "Leave (insert name here) alone!"

I'm in an environment now that I can't seem to get my head around.
I came from a company who had 2Mbps links between sites, a 3Mbps connection to the internet at head office (shared between 1000 people) and a really restrictive proxy.
3/10 pages I viewed on digg.com I could never get to. At DET I can view whatever the hell I like and at speeds that are quite good!

The trick is to get into a job where YOU control the network infrastructure. Then you can do what you like

It's brilliant because each school works slightly differently. There are schools out there that skype to schools in Japan, so Skype couldn't be blocked through our main proxies, I believe a firewall rule had to be changed for it though. But there are plenty of other things that come up that I would never have thought about until a teacher said I want to do this so we can show the kids this and this. It was brilliant because all the schools went through the central office internet solution, the solution had to be really relaxed to a point and then fine tuned at the school. So at some schools you could get to
www.hotmail.com and at some you couldn't...though we always got the blame for blocking it.

Problem is while we control the infrastructure the company still controls us, it just so happens that the education department requires the flexibility. Everyone knows that they're there to do a job and as such personal internet use was done during quiet periods in the school holidays and at 9pm at night when you hadn't had a phone call for 2 hours.
