A three-year-old US girl has shot herself in the head after finding a gun in her parent's bedroom.

The girl fired the gun to the right side of her head and is in a critical condition, The Associated Press reports.

Learner driver dies as car strikes pole

A teenage learner driver has died after the car he was driving crashed into a pole in Melbourne's north-west.

The boy, 16, of Kealba, lost control of the car and struck a power pole on Main Road East in nearby St Albans shortly after 3pm (AEST) on Monday, police said.

He died at the scene. Police believe he was driving alone at the time of the crash.

The legal driving age in Victoria is 18.

The death took Victoria's road toll to 98, 13 more than at the same time last year.
