We have had the roads closed around the parents home in applecross and these media people are content to sit for hours and hours in the same spot and wait around for any sort of action, though today wasnt to bad. This morning there was a good 30-50 of them until the Merc left and then they all rushed off somewhere leaving about 5-10 of them to wait until 12:30 for the bmw convey to leave under police escort.

The media can be quite brutal in their work but i suppose that all part of the job. It was quite amusing seeing them in the rain the other day although someone was clever a got a big tent thing and had the food/coffee can come down for welfare.

Future of fire helicopter to be decided next month.

The Western Australian Fire and Emergency Services Authority says its new Fire King helicopter has had a significant impact on its firefighting efforts this season.

The helicopter, which is being leased on a trial basis from the United States, can carry 4000 litres of water and has also been used as a transport vehicle for firefighters.

A decision on whether to retain the Fire King will be made at the end of the fire season next month.

FESA's Acting Manager of Air Operations Adam Bannister says it has been a busy season with a number of significant bushfires around the state.

"The start of the fire season, December, January, was one of the busiest we've encountered, and in saying that, that's not suggesting numbers of fires, that's just hours flown by helicopters," he said.

more people die in a month in the USA on the roads then have ever died on board a civil plane. So, a heck of a lot...
Sorry Stupid statement, how many commercial airliners crash per month in the world, largest single accident was 2 Jumbo's (Boeing 747) collided on runway in cannary islands back in late 70's, 500 odd killed, 370 survived, can't compare that agaist road idiots, especially in USA which still has open road speeds, no limmits.

The law is an ass, so pathetically weak in punishment for the crime, and prevention is weaker still.

Still safer in the air..
That accident was a Traffic controllers error,,,still safer in the air than on any road anywhere.

Actually it was a combination of bad weather, a terroist bomb threat at the airport they were all meant to land at, an arrogant KLM captain that started to take off without towers consent, the other airline captain (i think PAN AM) unsure of where to turn off the runway after landing due to the fog, and bad comms equipment that cancelled out simultaneous communications.

After the investigation handed down their report they put the blame on the KLM captain for not getting clearance to take off who incidently was the most experienced and decorated captain in KLM, ironic or what.
