A skydiver has escaped death after spiralling almost 2km to the ground.
The 45-year-old man lost control of his parachute after it became tangled and plunged to the ground, north of Adelaide on Saturday.
It was the man's first solo jump after completing training with professional skydivers.
He was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital and suffered multiple fractures to his legs and injuries to his chest.
He remains in critical condition.
Adelaide Tandem Skydiving safety officer Graeme Gransford said the man did not follow correct emergency procedure.
"When he was free falling he gave the instructors every indication he had completed the necessary drills effectively," Mr Gransford told the Adelaide Advertiser.
"He then indicated he was about to pull the rip cord and so the instructors moved away."
"He continued to fall quite rapidly but I'm unable to say why that happened," Mr Gransford said. "He did have a reserve chute and ample height for release
