WESTERN AUSTRALIAN TSUNAMI WARNING
For people in the coastal areas of Western Australia between Kuri Bay and Albany
Issued at 9:55 pm WST on Wednesday, 12 September 2007
A significant undersea earthquake of magnitude 7.9 occurred at 7:10 pm WST this
evening near Latitude 4.3 South Longitude 101.3 East, south of Sumatra. A
tsunami of 0.15m was observed at Cocos Island at 8:30pm WST and a destructive
ocean wide tsunami MAY have been generated.
People near the coast and on offshore islands are warned that there may be some
impact on the Northwest coast between Coral Bay and Karratha starting around
10:30 pm tonight, extending east to Broome and south to Geraldton and Perth
around midnight, and then extending south to Albany by 12:30am and north to Kuri
Bay by 01:30am.
Dangerous waves and currents may affect beaches, harbours and rivers for several
hours from the time of impact. Wave height may vary dramatically depending on
local effects. The waves can be separated in time by between ten to sixty
minutes and the first wave of the series may not be the largest.
FESA advises that you should move away from the foreshore. Emergency services
are on standby.
This warning will be updated by 11:00 pm WST Wednesday.
This warning is also available through TV and Radio broadcasts; the Bureau's
website at www.bom.gov.au, or FESA's website at www.fesa.wa.gov.au
The Bureau and FESA would appreciate this warning being broadcast regularly
