yes, according to the research people spend more time looking for them, rather than concentrating on the roadwritten_ficton wrote:it increases them? Huh?

I can hardly doubt that statement. Do you have any kind of material that backs up your claim?
I've closed the door!

I would be interested to read your research AO11912 as in contrast the Office of Road Safety says that:AO11912 wrote:Good for you.written_ficton wrote:I can hardly doubt that statement.

(http://www.ors.wa.gov.au/TopicsRoadSafe ... meras.aspx)Since their introduction, research has shown that speed cameras are highly effective in slowing motorists down and reducing crashes.
Can you please post a link to your source when you CBF?

In my own experience I find I'm glancing down at the speedo more than I really think I should...

Re: Those new speed camera's
agreed, and particulary with drivers on boarder line confidence/skill/experience this increased pressure to constantly check their speed detracts from watching other road users, just my opinion thoughvk6hgr wrote:In my own experience I find I'm glancing down at the speedo more than I really think I should...

Re: Those new speed camera's
Personally I've never really felt the need to check my speedo constantly. I know what 60 / 70 / 80 km/hr "feels like", and can generally get to within 4 or 5 km/hr of that without looking at the speedo at all.
Of course if I'm driving a different car, it takes a while to get the "feel" of the different speeds, and I find I need to check the speedo more often.

I just use cruise control wherever I go.
Obviously it's not much good down St Georges Tce but no issues on most major roads.

The thing is 4/5ks an hr is still enough to get pinged for, even it is only $75
Re: Those new speed camera's
Then aim for 4-5 under. Its a limit, not what you must do except on freeways/highways.
And remember most speedo's overcompensate by a few k's as well (best to check instead of guessing though) so those extra couple you go over usually don't matter.

Re: Those new speed camera's
Isn't the design standard for error 10%? ie so you need to be doing say 89kph to get done instead 88kph which is the error? I am happy to be corrected.
Re: Those new speed camera's
The ADR states your speedo can be out by 10% yes. I don't think this relates to speed cameras having to be set 10% above the speed limit to account for these errors though (although I'm not sure on that).
Generally speedo's are set up to 10% lower than real ground speed though.

Re: Those new speed camera's
Well, I've not had a speeding fine (or anything else for that matter) for over ten years, so my speed estimation must be better than a camera's tolerancebakerboy wrote:The thing is 4/5ks an hr is still enough to get pinged for, even it is only $75

Re: Those new speed camera's
yes, put simply.written_ficton wrote:it increases them? Huh?
i've searched around and will put some more effort into finding the study, but basically a researcher fitted a system that tracked eye movement of drivers and found that newer drivers, ones who got their licence after the introduction of roadside speed cameras, spent quite a significant amount of time watching the side of the road rather than straight ahead, as opposed to a group who had held their licenses for longer and whose eyes scanned the whole road.
i cant be sure of percentages, but i recall some of the guys tested actually spent more time looking for speed cameras than looking ahead.
basically we have trained a generation to not pay attention to what's important.
