Panoramic Pictures

Recently Blinky placed a panoramic picture in the topic 'SES Field Search Base'.

This seems to have sparked some interest in panoramic pictures and their construction. So rather than hijack that topic please feel free to continue the panoramic picture discussion here.

To kick things off, on our recent holiday to Sydney i took the following 2 pictures from the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylon Lookout. I used a Canon Powershot A200 to take the individual pictures (which has a panoramic assist mode built in), and then used the Canon software PhotoStitch to assemble them.

Nearly 180 degrees, you can see the wall in both the bottom left corner and right side.

The opposite bridge pylon is on the left (to the west) and Milson's Point to the north is on the right.

and panorama pics don't have to be scroll left or right. I did this one a while ago with 3 images of the Bunbury Lighthouse.
It's not one I am happy with as there are errors.

Made this a sticky. If someone uses a free piece of software like IrfanView or other (not the bodgy copy of CS4 Photoshop Extended that some people might be using) if you could do up a simple how to guide.

I found Autostitch Free Demo which does an excellent job, automatically. Don't know how long the demo will run but great results. Try it with your own pics or try with the two I provided below.

I think it is self explanatory. Open and select the images you want to stitch. Remember to keep some overlap in your picture taking to allow points to line up. Also when taking
photo's try to keep the camera at the same level. I try to keep my feet still as much as possible and click and move body only while looking in the view finder. Before I take a pic I look at whats
on the right edge of viewfinder and look for tree, bush,roof so when I pivot I then end up with that same bush,tree, roof inside the left side of the viewfinder after pivoting.

I suppose in order to allow you to experiment it would be an idea to provide a couple of images to try out. I just tried these 2 and it did not turn out too bad. See how you go.








I think you should be able to click on the images view large and save them.

There are some demo images in the download. Just go to FILE and OPEN and select the images to import. press shift and click with mouse to select more than one image. Then let the software do its thing.

I took this panoramic shot at this years Hopman Cup. Unfortunately it is full of errors but was worth a try.
Without a tripod and with the subject so close, despite my best efforts the horizontals were way out on each shot. The pics were taken from next to the TV Commentary box at the back of the northern stand.

Good to see some panoramic photo's
its really hard to make good panoramic photo when there is a lot of movement in the photo
then its hard to stitch them together without seeing errors.
important to have your camera in manual settings so there is no changes in each photo.

try doing a panoramic photo in portrait view, turns out well

Thats a great photo. I like the Ferrari up in the tower.

I am not in that league yet. I did my first gigapan last night with images I took a week or so ago. Mine consists of 60 images and shows as 0.13 Gigapixels compared to the 45 Gigapixel from Dubai mentioned above. I have a lot to learn.

There are errors, which I expected there would be.

Another panoramic pic from me, this time of Adelaide. Taken from the Light's Vision memorial lookout. The Adelaide Hills are in the background with the CBD to the right behind the Adelaide Oval. No tripod again so hand held, thus the merge errors are apparent.

Yeah, at this size it looks ok . Surprised me too when i posted it. The original is substantially larger and the errors are quite apparent .
