My trip to Kimberley remote community schools

Post by vk6hgr »

I've been in Kununurra this week and visited a number of (very!) remote community schools for work. Had my first flight in a light aircraft - a Cessna 182 - which was definitely a highlight of the trip.

It was great meeting the kids, too. They were always bubbly and happy and loved talking to us. At one school, we were there just after recess in "reading time" and the kids read for us. The year 7 boy I paired up with read his Endangered Animals reader really well and I knew he was proud when I told him and he smiled a big, bright smile :D

I was surprised to find out that the school day in the Kimberley usually starts at 7 or 7:30am and most of the remote community school kids don't wear shoes to school, either.

Here's some pics.

Me in the co-pilot seat. I was allowed to listen in on the headset :D

Heading out to Jungrdanung RCS. The light rain made the 4WD track pretty slippery (was great fun to drive, though)

Lastly, a quick stopover in Wyndham...

Ahhh reminds me of my time up there. We used to travel the West Kimberley and swag it at the communities. Sometimes by helicopter usually by car though. Bidyadanga, Bardi, Djarindjin, Beagle Bay, Bulgin, Karmilinunga, Yungngora, Kadjina, Ngumpan, Ngalinkadji, Cone Bay, Imintji, Kupingarri, Mowanjum, Windgingarre, Tirralindji, Bayulu, Muludja, Looma, Yackanarra, Wagkatjunka, Djugarari and the list goes on. A lot of them were too small to have schools though. Apologies for spelling.
