Joondana Lightning Strike 14-04-2008

Post by Tyranus »

As mentioned was a callout for lightning strike on house. I went with Bayswater, a couple more Stirling people came later.

Notice how high it is, and how cramped? (Makes me really love the hills!)

Singe marks and shrunken plastic courtesy of heat.

Starting to make temporary repairs

End result. there are 3 sets of saddled sand bags. (1 piece of rope with a sand bag at each end hanging over the roof; 1 of these has 3 sandbags 2 on one side and one on the other), other sand bags are secured to the pagola behind us.

Debris was found in the property with the pool on the right side of the photo.

its amazing to see how much damage lightning can do! you can only imagine the damage caused when a person is hit, and you have to wonder how in the hell some of them survive

You would have to think what else that zillion volt lightning effected, like electrical goods and the house wiring. Or if it traveled down any phone cables and jumped to OTHER phone cables in the street knocking out other peoples phones etc.

Lightning is just plain scary. I drove past a small tree after a storm about 6 months or more back, looked like somebody attacked it with TNT strapped to an axe.
"VKI, NJ050 will you be attending the job?"
"Negative VKI, my desk is bolted to the floor".

Lightning hit just above the main bedroom.
The occupants were in bed when it occured.
The strike blew out the mains box at the street and everything had to be replaced in there, not sure about the rest of the house wiring, but I'd presume that if it blew out the box, and fuse at the main lines the wiring might be in trouble.

Tyranus can you please inform me why does stirling 05 has a siren, where only ses units with road rescue abilities to my understanding are the only ses vehicles/units that can travel under emergency conditions?

Gotta love lightning... and to think it was probably only a small bolt that did that damage. I've had a similar small bolt strike a metal swing set that was approximately 40-50m away at my old place once. Definately a experience to keep you in check.

And yeah I would imagine the fuse/distribution block for that house and some others on the street would be R/S right about now.

What he said, which is also the same reason why Canning/South Perth has Red and Blues and Siren, as well as Wanneroo.
