I suspect that in towns etc, where the signals could be powered off the mains rather than solar or a generator, they were probably lit all the time. But in remote areas (i.e. middle of nowhere), they are only illuminated when necessary.

Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong!

Read http://www.snopes.com/horrors/techno/radar.asp and you'll see that it is wrong on a number of levels. (I especially like the part that a Sidewinder is a heat-seeking missile...)

Yep - I remember reading about it on Snopes as well ... but even with all its inaccuracies and implausibilities, it's still a funny story ;)

Well, i am meant to start my Night rating on wednesday... but this is the plane i'm meant to be flying: (meant to be out thursday... hopefully)

This is the wing, looking towards the engine:

The Engine:

On the front of the prop is the Constant Speed Unit (controlls the speed of the prop)

Image

Looking in the Nose of the aircraft... at the controll system (the big bike chain is what connects the two control colums

Image

The wing with the leading edge taken off... reveling the wing spar. (this had to be inspected because the company that makes the aircraft said so :P)

A seriously deformed aircraft at of best of times. Looks like a hyrbid of a 1960 design smacked with touch ups from the 2024 timeframe.

Have fun!

Give me a DHC6-300 any day!
I've closed the door!
