A Google search of the Web revealled the following information:
"Transport Inspectors can intercept vehicles at random while travelling on public roads or direct vehicles to temporary or fixed, off road or roadside inspection sites, which may involve a ‘road block’ exercise with other enforcement agencies (e.g. WA Police). Drivers must pull over or proceed to a safe stopping area when directed to by a Transport Inspector."
So yes, it would appear that they have the power to intercept any vehicle travelling on a public road.
As for their job, vehicle compliance would be the answer!
Often see Transport Inspectors set up a road block on Leach Highway between Manning Rd + Welshpool Rd. They stop ALL trucks apart from trucks with no load attached. I have yet to see them stop a car at these roadblocks. There is usually about 5 or 6 Inspector vehicles with the scales out.
People call me an "Egotistic Jackass"... I prefer the term "Confident Donkey" --->Donks for short

I agree - I think the transport inspectors are soley for heavy vechiles?
Often see them on Albany Highway as you come down the hill towards Armadale. Also on Great Nth Hwy before RAAF Base Pearce (aka Suburb of Bullsbrook haha). If they were pulling people over, does that mean they have sirens?

I have in the past seen these guys working with WAPOL at large-scale RBT stops. While the drivers 'blows', the transport inspector quickly walks around the car looking for anything that might indicate it's unroadworthy.

Was a joint operation with WAPOL Vehicle Examiners for Operation AUSTRANS....
Seen early AM today on Great Northern Hwy - massive traffic operation - TE209 (Blue XR8), TE206, AG208, AZ250 (Major Crash)and numerous other unmarked Commordore Sedans plus 2 Transport Inspector vehicles all in a roadblock, then a little further up the road was the booze bus.
Sounds like they are cracking down
