Fitting my new amateur FT-7800R to my car (Pic Intensive)

Post by Tyranus »

Ok so I thought of the camera a little after I started but basically I was trying to fiddle around with the carpet and decided to remove the seat to screw my CB and 7800 into the carpet.
Image

In the second photo you can see my GME CB, My cb had the cables tied up and was sitting loose under the driver seat...yes my car does need a clean :P
Image

This is where all my cables for amateur power, scanner and CB antenna's go through, the amateur antenna is going along a channel on the inside of the car.
Image

Ok so I've mounted the CB bracket and the Yaesu bracket down into the carpet. the power cable for the Yaesu (closest to the door) goes outside through the grommet.
Image

You can see in the next shot at the bottom of the plastic a kind of channel. I am utilising this for my coax cable...after I removed the rear seats from my car.
Image

Ok so where I've pulled away the door seal you can see some ribbed conduit, I've laid the coax along this, then under the carpet and through the hole that the other cables are coming out of. You can also see where the CB remote head is mounted in front of the gear stick
Image

I was having difficulty mounting my remote head bracket for the amateur set so removed the centre console...but forgot to take a photo till after. I've placed more power cable from the GME under the console to try and reduce the clutter under my chair.
Image

Here is the remote head for both radio's mounted in the car.
Image

As it stands...I have 2 power leads that need to be connected to the battery. I need to cut and terminate the other end of the coax to a UHF/VHF base and attach that to a L bracket at the back of my car and screw the antenna on. Test and make sure there are no problems with the antenna cabling! Also need to work out exactly where the microphone is going. I expect on the side of the centre console near where it is now.
Then it's just a matter of programming in the repeaters etc and getting on air!

Don't know about pic intensive, looks labour intensive. End result is very good. By the way, you need to get the vacumn out for your floor.

Gee I can't talk, you should see my floor.

M270 only because I'd already bought it and received it before I saw your post about it not being very good. Will have to run with it for a while. What I really need is a new N-type adaptor I think the one I bought from Dickie Smiths was missing bits or not right, it didn't look like the pin is through enough. :(

I have a speaker that i was using for my CB which I'm now using which is zip tied to the bottom of my chair, at the moment than mic is in the little compartment under the steering wheel. I'm thinking about mounting it on the side of the top centre console, in the blank space in line with the A/C button.
Anybody know whether I can get and where I can get a BNC to N-type connector? As making up a BNC connection is a lot easier!

I wasn't game to drill holes in the body or carpet of my car, so for the two speakers and FM92 remote head that I have in the back, I bought a carpet car mat, secured the mat to the car's carpet and secured the gear to the mat. Keeps everything secure without messing up the interior :)

Ahh I see what you mean. I've tried to do as little as possible and where I have had to make changes for the most part I've tried to make it hidden, he remote head is actually on a boot mount L bracket which is screwed to the underside, I just had to drill 4 holes in the top of the bracket. It's great...minus the bit where I can't hear anything because of a suspect connection.

The FT7800R has PL-259 according to the manual. Come to my work and I'll solder or crimp what-ever connector you like, if you want. I have a few spares. Especially PL-259. The less adaptors the better.

If it has a PL-259 connector on it then I'm Saddam Hussein! I thought it would to but luckily didn't purchase anything till after I saw it.
In fact I've found a picture of it here it matches almost perfectly with NS06 on page 2 :)

It might be an old manual I have. Page 15 item 1 says:

ANT Jack
Connect your antenna here, using a type-M (PL-259) plug and coaxial cable.

That pic in your link is definitely an N-type. Bonus. SO-239/PL-259 are not rated for >=200 MHz.

(I have solder and crimp)

Yeah possibly. I was expecting a PL-259 but unfortunatley it's not...Maybe N-type is better quality? I dunno? or maybe Yaesu just want to be different :P

D'oh, see my edit above. Yes, N-type is superior. They are rated up 11 GHz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N_connector) and have constant impedance. Look here for PL-259 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UHF_connector and why they shouldn't be used for UHF despite them incorrectly being called UHF connectors
