Well done on getting it out of the tree - I went and took a look but it seemed too hard. I was there about noon.
It was certainly quite a challenge, ended up pulling the balloon out of the other tree, cutting the line, then pulling the sonde through the top of the trees. I got there about 3:26 and spent about an hour trying to retrieve it.

So when hunting for it were you using 70cm FM? I thought I'd read that you need a SSB receiver and that FM wouldn't work....hope that's incorrect.

Initially used my radio tuned to 401.500 on NFM when I got there to make sure the beacon hadn't landed in the powerlines or had lost battery, then once I got into the bushland I used a laptop with an SDR and some software called Sondemonitor to nail down the location.
