Antenna and Magnetic Base to suit Vertex Handheld

Post by yogibear88 »

Hi,
I am looking somewhere to purchase a magnetic base and antenna to suit a vertex handheld. The frequencies I will be using to receive and transmit on are the DFES Waern channels. Can anyone recommend a good magnetic base and antenna to suit the Waern frequencies.

Thanks

Hi Yogi,

Just trying to understand a bit better what it is you're trying to achieve here. You mention receiving and transmitting - while it's perfectly OK to receive any radio signal that's not a telephone call, transmitting is a whole other story. You need to have a licence or be authorised by whoever the licencee is.

What kind of Vertex handheld is it and what environment are you trying to use it in and essentially, what's the problem you're trying to find a solution to?

Hi Zebedee,
The handheld is a Vertex Standard VX-829. The radio operator has permission to transmit on the DFES Waern network. The reason I am looking for an antenna on a magnetic base is when the operator is using the radio there personal vehicle there is inference due to the vehicle. I was maybe thinking a ground independent metal whip antenna would be the best. Just looking for somewhere to purchase these from.

UHF or VHF version? The VX829 has an SMA connector (female on the radio, male on the antenna), so you can grab an adapter from Prestige Comms/Spooktech/Strictly Ham etc for SMA to BNC or PL259 depending on the mag base you get.

Mag bases generally take grounded antennas and you place the mag base on a large metal surface such as a vehicle/tin/shed roof.

Antenna wise, you can grab one coupled with a base such as Diamon MR-73B

Or maybe a separate K702M then purchase an antenna to suit

Try Prestige Communications in Malaga if you're north of the river. You should be able to get a magnetic base from them which will probably have a PL259 plug on the end. An adapter to SMA will sort that side of it out and then a simple 5/16" threaded antenna for VHF high band will be the other half.

Just remember as someone else has said, the magbase will work best if its in the middle of the car's roof, then you can just run the cable through a door seal and it's nice and temporary and removable.

Does it have to be a mag base antenna? They're not particularly efficient and it's not going to make the 5W from the handheld go very far.

I'd recommend an antenna like the ZCG GRHFC http://zcg.com.au/d/GRHFC/ or this antenna from RFI http://www.rfiwireless.com.au/mobile-pr ... oNbBVlrWtY

mounted on the front wing of the vehicle. The difficulty with ZCG and RFI is that although they make great antennas they only sell through dealers and it can be a battle finding one in WA that'll sell you just 1 antenna.

Prestige sell the CD28 (not CD29) but should still be suitable.
