80 Channel UHF Information

Commencing January 1st 2011, The Australian Communications & Media Authority (ACMA) will change the Class License which covers the use of UHF CB radio. It is illegal to operate a UHF CB radio on any frequency not allocated under the current 40 channel Class License.



Following is the Official New Channel Allocation list, This is currently for reference use only and will not come into affect until the Class License changes January 1st 2011

Licenses for Repeater Channels 44 & 45 will not be licensed for an additional 6 to 12 months to allow extra time for owners of Channel 5 Emergency repeaters to upgrade equipment to meet the new standards



Channels 1 to 8 and 41 to 48 - Repeater Channels Press the DUPLEX button on your radio to used any available repeaters
Channel 5 & 35 - Emergency use only - Monitored by Volunteers, No general conversations are to take place on this channel
Channels 22 & 23 - Data transmissions only (Excluding Packet)
Channels 31 to 38 and 71 to 78 - Repeater inputs - Do not use these channels for simplex transmissions as you will interfere with conversations on channels 1 to 8 and 41 to 48


The Australian Government has legislated that channels 5 & 35 on the UHF CB Band are reserved for emergency use only
As at January 2007 the maximum penalties for the misuse of the legally allocated CB emergency channels are:
•For general misuse - if an individual 2 years imprisonment, otherwise $165,000 (a $220 on-the-spot fine can be issued in minor cases); or
•For interference to an Emergency call - if an individual 5 years imprisonment, otherwise $550,000


If you interfere with another persons conversation just select another channel and do not provoke troublemakers that may deliberately search out other people provoke a reaction, Just ignore them remember

I'm a bit confused..
Do I have to buy a new radio to access these channels?
I have a UH090 AM/UHF Base

Unless you have a commercial grade two-way that can be realigned/reprogrammed, then Yup, everyone needs to buy a new radio.

Wow! I'd love to be in UHF sales when this comes into play!

Was speaking to someone on ch3 repeater the other night, he said GME are taking pre orders for a new 80 channel radio.
Does anyone know any more about these?

Yep. The whole exercise is just a massive payday for Uniden and GME!

Basicly everyone who wants to use the new channels will have to buy another rig..

Just looked at Uniden, GME and iCom's websites.. They don't make and 80 channel shack!
Isn't this happening as of Jan next year??

I was reading on the GME site they have changed the software on the units so its now user programable so they can add the extra channels.

"One of the a major feature benefit to be added to the TX4400 is that the extra receive channels can now be User programmed into the radio channels from 41 to 60. Once activated the user can set and store any frequency between 465 and 485 MHz. This can be changed or the channel deleted at any time after initially being set, and all from the front face controls. No computer connection or software required. This feature is available on units with a serial number higher than 10803340."

Although you wouldn't be able to transmit on the new channels as they are receive only. A lot of good CB's have x amount of receive only channels anyway.

Oh, so the new channels are receive only?

I found the iCom Pro-400 holds an extra 48 channels (88 in total).
I'm confused by all this, think I'm going to keep my Uniden UHF for the moment..

The new channels are transmit also. No existing radios support the new CB channels.

The "extra channels" that some current CBs support are just a bonus to enable receiving other services (i.e. Police analogue)
