Does anyone know the the forty channels are used for, as in I know ch40 is for truckies but I also hear allot of chatter on channel 3 and 8, who uses these channels and what for.

UHF CB is for anyone to use. Channels 1-8 (and 31-38) are used for duplex mode repeaters, which use one channel to send to the repeater, and the other to receive from the repeater. This gives an increase in coverage with the repeater station typically located on the top of a hill/tower.

Channel 5/35 is reserved for emergency traffic only, and channels 22 and 23 are for data transmission only (although not packet data as used by hams).

CB is possibly the only place you'll find people with less discipline than police or security officers, with anyone being able to tx (with a $40 handheld).

I'm pretty sure I got the channels right, it's off the top of my head. All the other channels are just simplex channels for 2-way voice transmission. Often people will call someone on a channel, then change to another channel not currently in use to continue their conversation.

Although technically 40 is just a channel truckies use, it isn't assigned in the legal gunk outlining CB (the CBRS class license)

The CBRS license also designates ch11 as a calling channel.

Channels 1 through 8 (and the corresponding ch31-38 ) are repeater stations.

The ch1 repeater in Wanneroo for example listens on ch31 and retansmits whatever it hears there onto channel 1. Your radio when transmitting does the opposite - transmits on ch31 and listens on ch1.

Ch5/35 is an emergency channel. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It is monitored and it is an official emergency frequency.

Volunteers, usually. However, I know that it is also monitored by aircraft especially as they fly over remote areas.

As well as all of the abovementioned stuff, UHF CB channels 22 and 23 are also set aside by the ACA for "telemetry and telecommand" purposes.

Channel 8 repeater which is situated at the Capita Building 197 St Georges Terrace PERTH WA.

I was recently in shark bay and the CALM volunteers up there in the remote areas i was working with had huge ariels plugged into cb's and scanners
constantly scanning channels 5 and 35

is there an official body that moniters these channels as well?

I heard that the ACMA do their fair share of monitoring these two channels but I'm not too sure if this is true.
