Antenna help needed

Hi all. Linked is a photograph http://imgur.com/fAKgN99

That is the antenna connector. What standard is it ? The user manual does not say.

It's an SMA type I believe.

Awesome! So that means I can grab a male SMA terminator, some good co-axial cable and connect it to a real antenna?

I don't have a car, but having a collapsible high gain directional antenna for bushwalking in the middle of nowhere would be a godsend.

Yep just watch there are a couple of types of SMA connectors but if you visually match them its usually ok.

Okay, replying to my own post. I have decided to order two antennas:

One - Flexible compact for everyday use
Two, longer, higher gain unit for distance

Will these both work for UHF CB? I'm 99% certain it will.

They both work on the 476 and 477 MHz bands used for UHF CB

It has the right connection for the radio, and look decent enough for the price.

However, what would you recommend?

Both of those antennas are 400-470Mhz, UHF CB is 476-477Mhz, so technically they are out of band.

They will still work, but long term heavy use could do damage to the radio, and at the same time they won't work as good as an antenna tuned for 476-477Mhz.

I would look around at other alternatives if possible, buy something in Australia that is designed for UHF CB if you can.

Sadly, I have no transport other than public transport.

Are there any comms shops in the city? I looked for a while, but couldn't find it.

Thanks.

EDIT!

I found a good unit at:
http://www.mobileone.com.au/antennas/2b_477mhzhand.html

It's the bottom one. For $50, a handmade, tuned, and properly terminated antenna looks to be the go. I'm happy with going ahead with that.

Two places you might want to check out are Prestige Communications in Malaga and the WA CB Centre in the city. They both carry UHF CB gear.

Dunno if they have that MobileOne antenna you were looking for but they might be worth looking into.

I'm enquiring about that mobileone with mobileone.

I'll just buy it straight from him.

I have heard good things about his handmade units, and I like supporting aussie businesses.

Mobile one antennas are great and the service is second to none.

He tuned a 27MHz whip to 29mhz for me for no extra charge and it works well.

Dude knows what he's doing. Recommended.

Yep! Good workmanship by the looks of things. I'll update when I get it in the next week or so. (Hopefully before Christmas, going down south so I want good comms.)

The mobileOne unit arrived!

Slapped it on, and WOW!

I was able to get the channel 8 repeater, and the channel 3 repeater, while I was sitting inside the house. (Talking on the repeater while on the dunny is a beautiful thing.)

Next up, time to try CH 1 outside.

Well, most of the stuff discussed on those repeaters should go straight into the toilet too. :/

Anyway, here's a piccie of it.
