While I was listening to the chatter on the channel 6 repeater today, someone managed to get a call through with a fair bit of distance. Our Ch. 6 repeater is based near Maleny, QLD. The caller stated that he was in Ipswich, QLD. If he was telling the truth, and using legit 5 watt gear, that's a pretty good effort.

It's duct season again. Check this out why it happens
I had a convo with someone in Northampton about 480 km away on 146.675 MHz. Normally I would get 25-40 km.
The same effect can be seen on TV and FM broadcast as well.

Nice photo of a duct on the page that link goes to.

I usually only listen to the FM broadcast stations that I have programmed into my receiver. Maybe it's time I turned the dial through the band and see if I can spot anything different.

I stopped at Cocklebiddy on the Nullarbor one summer evening. I couldn't find a spot on the FM band that was empty. Some frequencies had multiple stations.
Cocklebiddy is about 1100 km from Perth! I reckon I was receiving every Perth and regional station for 1500 km away. The next morning there was no stations at all. Not a sausage.

I also monitor AIS (ship tracking) on 161.975 & 162.025 MHz. Last summer I was picking up ships in Albany over 400 km away some days.

When it's good it's great!
