Hey Just A General Question.

I Did See The 747-400 Yesterday With And Extra Engine Im Curious The Rules About The Carriage Of The Extra Engines

I Was Under The Impression They Were Not Allowed To Carry Extra Engines Under The Wing

So Just Wondering The Rules Set out By CASA About That Topic

Its not something that happens on a regular basis carrying a spare engine onboard a 747 [One of only a handful of aircraft that can do it] but its perfectly safe and has been carried out for years.

Not sure about the rules that are set aside by CASA, but A01192 gives out a reasonably good explanation on what the pilots have to do to compensate for the extra engine under the June / July / August sightings.

I had a quick flick through the CARs, couldn't see anything for/against. Might have another look later.

A lot would be outlined by the manufacturer in the certification process.

Only the RR and PW engines can be 5th Podded. Only the Tristar and the B747 can carry a 5th pod engine, and it was Boeing who designated that and not CASA, and then the operator simply puts it into their ops manuals. As for what the flight is, I think off memory you need 5degrees of rudder, which is programed into the FMC by the engineers.

707 can fifth pod.

There is a option in the FMC to select

and the B707, KC135, Dash 80, B720 to be exact. I forgot about that.
