Anyway, were getting off track to what this discussion was about.

A Lockheed P-3 Orion is currently on bay 60 at the international, arrived from Diego Garcia last night at around 20:30 and is due to leave at 14:00 today.

Pretty rare sight here in PER!!

I'd say! They usually use RAAF Pearce.

It was a RAAF, and there is another of their C17's here now too!

QF 63 SYD JNB will be making a fuel stop in PER today, ETA 1235 ETD 1335, this aircraft will be a B747 operating with a 5th pod.

For those that don't know what a 5th pod it, there will be a extra engine attached under the left wing, this engine is being transported to go on VH-OJL which suffered an engine fault departing JNB recently.

A few people had a look and took some pix airside, this is mine

But i saw the fire fighters there standing in front of it.

Also the out going Tech crew took photos in front of it.

5th Pod's are common for Qantas

After the QF32 incident, there was a 747 that suffered a incident out of Singapore, a 5th pod was transported for it, also a 5th pod by Qantas has been seen in the USA.

When using a 5th pod, the rudder is offset to the right to compensate, obviously more drag, and the head winds to JNB mean the aircraft had to stop in PER for Fuel.

When landing the reverse thrust for the inboard engine is not used, to prevent damage to the 5th POD

There is an Air Crash investigations episode, for a Air India 747 that was flying USA UK India, it was blown up by a terrorist bomb in the hold, it crashed near Cork Ireland in 1985 it was carrying a 5th Pod

A 5th pod would save the use of getting a freighter, as you can also have a revenue flight, while transporting a spare engine.

It's uncommon now days to see a 5th 'engine' on a B747, but always a true sight to see one!

Qantas have sent quite a few out in the last 12 months

One to Rescue QF74 and another to Rescue QF6

Yeh I Was Working On Another A330 And Watched This Land Took Three Looks and to ask someone else if they sasw three engines on it but yer very rare and interesting

Considering a 747 'generally' takes off once every 10mins around the world, it is a pretty rare ocassion! And Perth!

In The Picture iy just looks Like A shell Can It Acctually Work There or What Does it Need for it to run when i t reaches is destination

Its a full working engine designed to swap straight onto the other aircraft.

It can't operate where it is now, and looking at it, I would say the N1 fan has been removed and is either in the hold, or will be swapped with the other engine.


The engine is lifted into.position by chain block, and a pin is used to stop the components moving in flight, a cover is also placed to protect the narcel.
