What is

Post by Moolooman »

The ideal set up if you want to listen in on domestic and international aviation, including ATC?

I am a bored newbie here in freo, I want to set up a base station...

Can you help me?

What scanner/s will I need? How much are they? Anyone have a decent second hand one?

What antenna will I need, how large, how do I set it up and how much?

I am on a bit of a hill here so what could I expect to be able to pick up?

Basically anything flying I want to pick up!

Cheers guys.

i would not have a clue what equipment you will need, but i can tell you the frequencies:

Perth radar: 135.25
Perth departures: 118.70
Perth approach: 123.70
Perth tower: 120.50
Perth ground: 121.70
Perth clearance delivery: 118.55 /132.95
Jandakot tower: 118.10 / 119.40
Jandakot ground: 124.30

Just remember, because you are in freo, you may be able to pick up the aircraft, but probably not the controller.

Moolooman,

Due to your location, you are not going to be able to receive much without setting up an external antenna with your base station.

Have a look at this URL which will allow you to monitor live ATC traffic from the internet.

I was sort of planning to use an external antenna anyways, so no probs there.

What would be the best set up in terms of scanner and antenna etc?

Where could I buy this stuff?

Thanks lads!

The SCBASE antenna seems to be popular http://www.prestigecom.net.au/index.php ... ts_id=1335

Yorky,

The Perth live ATC feed has unfortunately been down for a while.

There must be somebody in Perth near YPPH or YPJT willing to become a feeder site.................any takers :?: :?: :?:

A discone mounted 20ft above ground would be awesome for what you want. (If you can afford it). It's also quite broad banded so it would be good for other scanning as well.

Cheers

My chimney is about 35ft from street level and my house is quite a bit above sea level so my feeling is I probaby would get good reception. Actually that is part of the reason this interests me, even 31 used to be crystal clear around here!

What type of scanner should I get? What range, brand etc?

Thanks guys!

Sorry the netgear wireless router is too unreliable, and too old for further firmware updates.
If I can get it to break and die and get a good D-Link one then once all my amateur stuff is sorted I may look at streaming options.

Fantastic!
As for scanner, take a hike around the Scanners and Receivers section, and the reviews, as slipknot did a good review of the UBC93XLT which is what a number of us board members use and are all happy with, if you don't need so many channels then try the UBC73XLT it's little brother.

[-X

There is NO such thing as a GOOD D-link router...If you want a real router go for Billion or Linksys. D-link is the next worst after Netgear...piles of junk!

I spent 2 years on an ISP helpdesk and in general D-link's don't have a very good name around the place. Yes they work, but they aren't anywhere near the upper end of the better brands.

What do you think about this scanner, will I be able to pick up aviation stuff on it?

http://www.prestigecom.net.au/index.php ... cts_id=204

Is it a good brand?

Cheers!

Yep that's not bad, similar to the 93XLT except a desktop/mobile version.
