Air Frequency's Perth / Country

Post by victor2121 »

Just wondering about Perth Domestic and International Depature/Approach Frequencys..

In Geraldton Area Active ones are:

121.200 Melbourne Control (very strong)
126.700 Local area
125.200 ??
134.200 Melbourne Control (weak) ??

Does anyone Know what the term "Namboo" means ?

'NAMBU' is an IFR (instrument flight rules) waypoint, located at S 30 41.1, E 115 26.8. If you drove to this location, there'd be nothing to see because IFR waypoints are typically points that are used for aircraft navigation and route reporting, and given meaningless five-letter names like AVKAN, MULGI and RETAL. They generally don't relate to anything on the ground, and there are dozens dotted across the country, and the ocean. You can get maps (sorry, charts) from pilot shops that show where the waypoints are.

NAMBU is about a third of the way between Perth and Geraldton, so it's likely that aircraft flying directly from Perth to Geraldton (and return) would be notifying ATC that they're 'estimating NAMBU' at a particular time, or are 'NAMBU this time' when they reach the waypoint.

If there are any pilots on the group, please correct me if I've got any of this wrong!

In many instances the waypoint name does have some relevance to location eg.AMAD ( Armadale ) MANTLE ( Fremantle ) DONGA ( Dongara ) JENNA ( Jennacubbine ) but this is no way an accurate location of these places and the original explanation from Steve is pretty much right on the money. The ones that are named close to a landmark or location are often those associated with mandatory radio broadcasts that must be made by pilots during IFR flights and/or at the transition from IFR to VFR, such as when flying the GAAP approaches into YPJT.
