Melbourne Centre

Post by Bonez »

Where abouts does Melb centre hang out these days?

I remember quite a few years ago with a cheap Uniden scanner and nothing other than the supplied rubber ducky I could hear it inside my house quite loud on 120.000mhz.

I have a feeling it's now somewhere towards 120.8 (would that be correct) but I find that I can only hear it at certain times of the day with just the same supplied antenna.

I do have a broadband scanning antenna but it's only sitting on a mag base in the gutter. Should I be able to hear it with that?

Thanks

Melbourne Centre are on:

120.3 for aircraft at more than 5000ft, and 36-80nm S/SE of Perth
122.4 for aircraft outside 36nm N-W of Perth
125.2 for aircraft 90-160nm from Perth
133.9 for aircraft 36-90nm from Perth

With airband AM, antenna location is everything. The higher the better. In a lot of cases you're looking to receive a simplex transmission from an aircraft and while it's a good line of sight if they're flying over your house at 10,000ft, if they're on descent into Perth Airport and some miles away, the signal could be quite weak.
